Register for the symposium

On April 2, 2022, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi Church and Pax Christi Metro New York, along with SOMOS Community Care and Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New York, will be hosting a symposium on Catholic Social Teaching – a fundamental value of the Catholic tradition.
The symposium, entitled “Good News in Tough Times: Following Jesus in a Wounded Church and Divided Nation,” will be conducted in English and in Spanish.
The morning will feature two keynote speakers:

John Carr is the founder and co-director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. He served for over 20 years as director of the Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Mr. Carr will deliver his keynote speech in English.
Octavio Cisneros is a Cuban-American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop from 2006 to 2020. Bishop Cisneros’s activities have included associations with the Northeast Catholic Center for Hispanics, the “Instituto Nacional Hispano de Liturgia,” the board of governors of Immaculate Conception Seminary, the Bishop’s Committee on the Liturgy, the Pastors’ Advisory Committee and the Conference of Diocesan Directors for the Spanish Apostolate, which he served as president. Bishop Cisneros will deliver his keynote speech in Spanish.
The afternoon will give participants the opportunity to attend two small group sessions on the following topics: climate justice, immigration, homelessness, war and peace, poverty and violence, and empowering the poor.
The day will end with a bilingual Mass presided by Archbishop Roberto González, OFM, San Juan, Puerto Rico
